Gabriela Women’s Party Representatives Liza Maza and Luz Ilagan voted “NO” to a motion declaring the seat of the House of Representatives vacant. “Our vote is an assertion of Congress’ independence from Malacanang.”
In explaining her vote, Rep. Maza dubbed the move to remove Speaker Jose de Venecia “Malacanang instigated coup in the House of Representatives.”
The Gabriela solons criticized the moves to replace the House leadership as a political maneuver instigated by Malacanang and its allies, not to instill reforms in Congress, but to further cement its ties with Mrs. Arroyo.
Rep. Ilagan for her part said that this move was “No different from a game of chess, where pawns are sacrificed to save the queen. It is a move to protect the belaguered Arroyo leadership from unresolved issues of electoral fraud, bribery and corruption.”
“To vote ‘no’ is not condone the sins enumerated by Speaker De Venecia. To vote ‘no’ is to vote for a Congress independent of Malacanang,” said Rep. Maza.
In her manifestation of vote, Rep. #
